Ostrovsky (CAS’06, MED’11) received the $3,000 award for building a tool within the website Health Matters in San Francisco, which combines public health and social media. His tool, San Francisco Community Vital Signs, is designed to help promote the city’s health priorities by establishing ten priority health goals and by building an agenda for community health improvement. The MMS typically awards two such prizes a year for technological accomplishments that help doctors practice or teach medicine or pursue clinical research.
Dr. Vibbert is a clinical psychologist and directs the acclaimed SPARK Center in Mattapan, MA. The SPARK Center is a model childcare program offering comprehensive, integrated, state-of-the-art services for children and families whose lives are affected by medical, emotional and/or behavioral challenges. The program serves Boston’s highest-risk children: those living with complicated medical conditions (including neuro-developmental challenges, failure to thrive and HIV/AIDS); as well as children who are involved with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families due to significant family and social concerns (including child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, adult substance abuse). A new group of fragile children now attend SPARK. These are ‘very low birth weight’ babies who were born too early and too small, and need our specialized care and attention.
In addition to directing the SPARK Center, Dr. Vibbert provides counseling as a pediatric psychologist. Much of her counseling is directed at helping parents understand their children’s special needs. Have a look at Dr. Vibbert skillfully explain common issues that many children and parents deal with including ADHD, aggressive behavior, and bedtime routines, among many others! http://eclinic.com/physicians/martha-vibbert
We would like to warmly welcome Dr. Burns as the first Family Medicine physician to start using eClinic.com! His videos add great breadth the topics discussed on eClinic and we are hopeful this is the start of strong tradition of primary care health education on eClinic.com. Have a look at Dr. Burns’ in action: http://eclinic.com/physicians/geoffrey-burns
Dr. Burns has been practicing family medicine for over 15 years. At his clinic in Waltham, MA, he sees patients across the full spectrum of age and illness. In addition to his day job in Waltham, Dr. Burns volunteers at a free clinic for underserved patients in East Boston. He also volunteers on a yearly basis as the island doctor in a remote fishing village off the coast of Massachusetts. His volunteering spans more than just one continent because Dr. Burns also travels to Guatemala every year to provide free healthcare services to tribal communities with little to no access to any other physicians.
In addition to his volunteering and global health participation, Dr. Burns is involved with several efforts around Boston that focus on strengthening access to primary care and improving healthcare quality. In line with his interest in using innovative ways to improve patient care, he started using eClinic to improve the education of his patients. As Dr. Burns’ put it, he wants his eClinic videos to be a source of “everything I wish I could tell the patient but didn’t have time to do so.”
We are really excited to have Dr. Burns on eClinic, and we look forward to many more contributions from primary care practitioners.
WSJ article covers the controversial issue of whether cell phones are hazardous to our health. The bottom line is that the data is still uncertain at best. Read for yourselves and tell us what you think:

Today we launched the eClinic.com Beta site. It is exciting to finally release the site to the public after so many hours of hard work. This is a site that grew out of an idea in medical school and slowly but steadily turned into eClinic.com.
We are grateful for all the help provided to us by advisors, physicians, and friends. The website was built by electric pulp, who did a fantastic job representing our vision of what a modern, personal health website should be.
We hope this launch is just the beginning for eClinic.com, as we have many ideas on how the website can continue to grow and improve the quality of people’s health.
We welcome your thoughts and suggestions, and we hope that eClinic.com will contribute to your health and well-being.
Dr. Kenney is a gastroenterologist at Carney Hospital in Dorchester Massachusetts where he practices with his two sons, also gastroenterologists. Dr. Kenney was one of the first physicians in the United States to use colonoscopy.
Dr. Kenney is very involved with the teaching program at Carney Hospital. He has been very supportive of eClinic.com and has provided feedback in addition to recording videos.
In this series of videos, Dr. Kenney introduces himself and his practice, and addresses common questions that people often have for a gastroenterologist.
The healthcare profession has lagged behind not only in healthcare IT but also in utilizing existing social technology to communicate with patients. The Internet has not waited for doctors to catch up. Rather than physicians establishing their own online identities, other parties such as rate-a-physician sites have done it for them.
Message boards and rate-a-physician sites have value but at best are incomplete and may give a skewed image. By showing transparently who they are, while at the same time providing information that personally connects with and helps others, doctors, through eClinic, can take control of their own online identity.
